Homemade vanilla powder is super easy to make. It’s a great way to add a punch of vanilla flavor to your smoothies, ice cream, baked goods and more!
This recipe uses 1 ingredient, vanilla pods. Because the flavor is so robust compared to an extract you only need half as much. So, if your recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract you only need to use ½ a teaspoon of vanilla powder.
Many recipes call for vanilla beans. This means you are typically slicing a vanilla bean in half lengthwise and using a sharp knife to scrape the filling and toss the pod away. Based on the price of vanilla beans pods that is a serious waste of money.
Where to use vanilla powder? Anywhere you would use the extract; vanilla sugar, ice cream, sauces, custards, pudding, overnight oats, baked goods, smoothies.
Ready for the recipe? It’s only two steps.
Step One: You need dry vanilla beans. Simply leave them out on a cookie rack on the counter for a few weeks OR place on a lined cookie sheet in a 122-degree oven for 1.5-2 hours till dry and brittle.
Step Two: Break the brittle pods into a coffee/spice grinder and process into a powder. If they are not completely dry, they will not blend into a smooth powder.
Store in an airtight labelled jar in your cupboard or pantry away from heat. This will easily keep for a year.
That’s it!
Now that you have created your own vanilla powder, how will you use it?
